How do you graffiti?

How to use Banksy and Graffiti in the primary school?

  • I'm a trainee primary school teacher completing my degree, and our art assignment is to choose a contemporary artist and then discuss four activities we could use in school relating to our artist, and basically discuss how we'd approach it in school. I've chosen Banksy because I think the topic of Graffiti is a controversial one, and I think it would be an interesting one to do in year five or six. I'm prepared to discuss both the pros and cons, with an emphasis on the illegality of most of it and how to combat. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for art activities I could use? I like the idea of reverse graffiti http://www.kalenzo.com/2008/06/reverse-g%E2%80%A6 but wouldn't be sure how to approach this in the classroom. I also thought about name tagging and perhaps creating a mural but beyond that, I'm stuck! I want to encourage self expression but not create a class of potential graffiti vandals. Please help :)

  • Answer:

you don't need to say people do it on walls. just don't mention it. tell them about graffiti art gallery's rather than illegal graffiti
