How do you make your own fabric prints?

Want to make custom fabric, need to know if using an image for personal one time use is legal?

  • Ok I found this cool site that you can make custom fabric on. I wanted to have a specific theme for my son's b-day party...and they have no supplies out there that matches. I wanted to get 2 yards of fabric made to use as table covers at the party, with a picture from a kids book. I found the picture on the internet, and was going to make the material...then read there copywrite statement on the custom fabric page. They said it was up to the person who designed the fabric to know if the image is under copywrite. Just curious since I am not going to make profit off of it is it ok to make this fabric? Thanks for any info!

    Without the permission of the copyright holder, no, it is not legal. Nor would it fall under the educational provisions of "Fair Use". The issue is that the site that you pay to have the work done IS making money off of the deal, and that is, CLEARLY copyright infringement. And, if you didn't create the image yourself, it is a safe bet that it IS copyright protected. Even though their copyright statement tries to put the responsibility on YOU, they are still liable for prosecution if they get caught doing the printing. http://www.copyright.gov .

This does NOT say that the image is copyrighted, but it may be implied. It would be easy to email the artist and ask if you can use it for a private child's Birthday Party...he/she will probably have no problem with that. On the other hand, unless the Publisher is attending your son's party, I'd use it anyway...change a few things so it isn't an exact copy. It's actually free advertising if other parents like the design and ask who did it!
