What is a Capture Card?

What exactly does an HDMI capture card "do" and why would I want one?

I make youtube videos for my channel.. and also I am thinking of getting into stop motion.. but I have heard of HDMI capture cards and need someone to tell me in layman's terms what do the do and why it would be good to have one.. what are they used for? Why not just capture the video with my digital camera and then download the file to my computer's hard drive from the camera and edit in with powerdirector like i have been doing. what is gained by adding and HDMI capture card into the process.. what changes? So, what does an HDMI capture card do? Thanks

Well, with all you have, it doesn't do much for you. But what if you have HDMI video already and you want to have frames from that? A capture card has enough memory to hold a video frame and hardware to decode the video stream into bytes for storage in memory.
