Can a person be a graphic designer without a graphic design degree?

  • I am a student that has taken graphic design courses this year and I like it. I am in my second to last quarter of school and I am set to graduate with a Bachelors of Art degree. My graphic design teachers and upperclassmen G.D. students say my portfolio looks very good. My question is, if I graduate with the BA degree and have a GREAT portfolio, would it matter that I don't have the actual Graphic Design degree? I mean, doesn't your work speak for itself?

  • Answer:

Doesn't really matter that you have a BA. In fact, most college graphic design programs fall generally under a BFA or BA, not as their own category. The only thing I would suggest is to annotate your resume to say "Bachelor of Arts - Graphic Design Concentration", just in case your application goes through some rookie Human Resources twit who may not be familiar with Art degrees.
