What are the primary colors?

What are the complementary colors for all primary colors?

  • I am doing some painting and I would like to know what are matching complementary colors.

  • Answer:

In color theory for photography, complementary colors are located on oposite sides of the color wheel. For the primary colors, these pairs are: Yellow - Purple Blue - Orange Red - Green A full diagram can be found here: http://myphotographylessons.com/how-to-use-complementary-colors-in-photography/ Solid complementary colors next to each other will create a bold image with lots of contrast. Mixing a small amount of a color's complementary opposite will darken and dull the original, main, color. This is useful for making shadows.

In traditional color theory, complementary colors are directly across from primary colors on the color wheel. In theory, if you mix a (pure) primary color with it's complement, you get grey as they cancel each other out. (Remember Black is NO color, and White is ALL colors). RED - GREEN YELLOW - PURPLE BLUE - ORANGE These are specific colors ie not just any shade of BLUE etc. To find the color opposite a mixed color use both complementary colors. example- YOU mix RED and ORANGE. The colors opposite on the wheel are Green and Blue. So the opposite color would be a mix of GREEN and BLUE. I believe in interior design etc. when you speak of complementary colors, you are referring to a chosen color and the complementary colors are the colors next to it on the wheel. This is for choosing a palette for decorating.

When looking at the color wheel, colors next to each other are complementary. If you want a calming affect use shades of a color. For a bold look, you can use colors directly across on the wheel. Black, white, brown and gray go with everything.
