What should I change on this 3D animation that I've made?

Which college to attend - Digital art & 3D animation- Queens, New York?

  • Hi, everyone; I´m 17 years old, have a High School diploma (Not from USA), I am resident in Queens, New York and I want to attend to a Digital arts and 3D animation college or institute. I have done a deep research I think these are the best two possibilities: The Art Institutes of Philadelphia - Online - Media arts & animation - Bachelor City University of New York (Queens college) - Campus - Digital media program - Bachelor I`m interested especificly in taking these classes: General digital art Drawing for 3D animation and storyboard 3D modeling, texturing, compositing, animating and rendering Sound FX designer and music composer Film editing, composing and mastering I am good at: Creativity (Freaky MacGyver-like ideas) Drawing (Finishing, shadows, shades, etc) Music (Recording, Editing, Mixing, Composing) Video and Image (Editing, Composing, Rendering) 3D (Modeling, texturing, Rendering, Stereographic) PC (almost any task) I know what you may think. . But I can manage to handle any software with a little practice and some Internet research and tutorials, but, for now, I`ve only experience with these mayor software: Google Sketchup Reallusion IClone Adobe Phosothop Adobe Premiere Adobe After Effects Adobe Illustrator Adobe Audition Magix Video Pro Sony Vegas Fruty Loops Corel Video Studio Pinnacle HD Audacity Phantamorph Genetica Terragen Natural motion Endorphin Microsoft Office And so, and so... As you can see, I haven`t almost any experience with Autodesk 3D Studio or Maya or ZBrush, because I know that they are extense classes that I may learn in college. Now, what I`m asking for is: Advises about any college requirement or career tips. Advises according to my interests, knowledge and your experience. Opinions about what topics should I be studying or software that should I be practicing. Statistics about jobs hirings on each branch of my career so that I can focus my effort on that one. Computer hardware or software requirements. Tips about learning or software techniques. Any other useful opinion, advise, idea, tool, webpage or possibility. I really have a passion for this carreer and I really hope that you could help me.

  • Answer:

If its one of the Art Institutes run by EDMC (all of them that use the AI logo), avoid them like a plague. They're not an art school employers take seriously. They're open enrollment, they take ANYONE. They just want the financial aid from the government that you are entitled to. The government is now suing them for 11 Billion Dollars which could wipe them off the map easily. If you ask me, they're an elaborate corporate scam to funnel as many Government Pell grants and guaranteed loans out of students as they can and leave the students with the bill. They're like McDonald's of Art "Colleges". They're a chain that is popping up everywhere. They buy out dying schools, rename them, keep the accreditation. They create programs designed for impulse buyers and quick hits aka uninformed students. They may seem like they would be good, but it is all smoke and mirrors. Pretty building with pretty computers. Meanwhile, it will just ruin your life. The market demand they say they're meeting is not the demand of the Job market, its the demand of the students. Students that graduated AI are struggling to get jobs and have over more than $50,000+ or $90,000+ in debt depending on what degree they went for. Degrees that are worthless in the job market. Basically, AI is a degree mill. They use bloated success stats and circle logic to back them up. They count students working at Toys R Us as in the field. Avoid them if you want to actually have a decent future. If you really want to pursue your passion, go to a community college, study fine art, and then transfer into a state school. It will be cheaper and the money you save you can buy your own equipment and STILL have money left over for a better future. Their job leads are bogus, they go to Monster, Craigslist, and career builder just like everyone else. Their top employer is HOME DEPOT (Check their own website) and I guarantee none of those are art jobs. Don't make the same mistake my friends and I did. We'll be paying for it for the rest of our lives. If you go with AI you'll be folding clothes at Target or hawking video games at Toys R Us for $8.25 an hour and struggling to pay $90,000+ with bill collectors haunting your every waking moment for the REST OF YOUR LIFE with no way to stop them because there is no bankruptcy protection on Student loans. Please please please make sure you check out these news articles below. Many are accounts from students, staff, and teachers of AI. Feel free to check YELP ("Filtered results" as well.) What you do with this information is your choice, I just want to make sure you know everything before listening to one of their recruiters sales pitch. Remember, they're paid sales people. Not your friend. College may be expensive but what these guys are pulling is straight out highway robbery. Decide for yourself.

You didn't specify what field you want to get into: is it animation? Video production? Video games? My words of wisdom: -A campus school is considered more "credible" than an online school in the eyes of employers. It's also better to work with a teacher who can answer all of your questions face-to-face. -Finding a job as an artist is difficult. -After you get into college, immediately visit the "career development center" (or whatever they will call it there) so they can help you with finding a job after you graduate. -Visit the internship office/center while in college. The "work" experience will help you find a job after you graduate. -After you graduate, you should have a website with your best work shown, so you can show it to employers for when you apply for a job. -Maya can be very complicated compared to other programs. -You asked about statistics.
