What are some recent art contests in Southern California?

Art school or university for Graphic Design? (California)?

  • Okay, so I am set on wanting to go into a major that has design. Specifically Web/Graphics/Print Design but... is it a smarter choice to attend a 4 year university or a private art college/school? My choices are: Art Center (Pasadena) Otis (LA) UC San Diego (San Diego) UC Los Angeles (LA) (more but I don't remember) I'm leaning more towards Art Center and UC San Diego? Which will help me more? ASSIST.ORG is a website that helps me look at which extra courses I need to transfer to a certain school but there is no such site for private art schools so it is harder for me to plan ahead. I would also like to stay closer to the area rather than move to north cali or out of state. People told me that since I have no experience in designing or anything its better to go to a private art school where they will work your butt off rather than a degree program that just teaches you what everyone else could learn online. But price is a factor to ... think about. Private art schools will be WAY expensive.

  • Answer:

The average age of freshmen at Art Center is about 22 years old. Most students attend a college or community college to get general education done (art is a business), and to have time to come up with an appropriate portfolio. They do admit some students straight out of high school, but they tend to be kids who went to art high schools, or have had a lot of outside of school art classes, or exceptional talent that is shown by their portfolio. Art Center is expensive, but most grads I know believe it is worth it, even if the school's philosophy turned out to be different than their own philosophy. Art Center is tough, it will be stressful and draining. Their expectations are very high, but you will learn and grow. Realistically though, good paying jobs in the arts are very tough to get, very competitive, especially in the LA area and So Cal, something to consider if you'll need to get big student loans. However, with a degree from Art Center will carry a lot of weight with employers. But really consider the consequences of heavy debt. Have you toured Art Center and shown your portfolio? You can meet with an Admissions Officer and they give you advice on your portfolio. Art Center Visit http://www.artcenter.edu/accd/campus/visit.jsp Is CalArts on your list? http://calarts.edu/ Check out art programs: Portfolio Day http://www.portfolioday.net/ The next one in So Cal is in San Diego in January. You might apply, see where you are admitted, and see what type of financial aid packages they offer you. Good luck!

Since u have schools around the LA area on your list, have you've looked into FIDM? They have a great graphic design program that is soooo diverse in the careers ucan enter AND they have killer connections through their career center 2 which is very important. I've seen some of the work from the graphic design students: From movie posters 2 CD covers and magazine covers, they really do a lot of work. My friend's boyfriend graduated from FIDM and now he works for Pixar which is pretty cool from what I hear, the graphic design students work for a wide variety of companies which is pretty awesome. I do know that FIDM has an iTunes app if u want more info on the school :)

Well if you're leaning to one of those schools i would say UCSD because they offer some great classes for Graphic Design. Currently right now im studying graphic design and im going to the Art Institute of California - San Diego and i have learned a lot. And if you have no experience they offer classes such as Photo Manipulation 1 which is for beginners and you progress throughout school getting better and better. I think it's a great school but it is a private school and the price might be something. But you can always give a call and take a tour of the school. I would say either UCSD or the art institute in san diego. But hope you find a good school and good luck (: if you have any other questions ask (:
