How do I get my artwork into a gallery?

  • How do I get my artwork exhibited in a gallery?

  • Answer:

Hey, Great question. Great because you asked. Not asking it often the biggest mistake new artist make. First you will need to visit the gallery you want to be in. Note what you see. As you leave ask to see some of the upcoming show information. You might be able to get a few post cards of the showing artists. Next ask if you can get a copy of the submission guidelines. This is the blueprint for how to get in. Your not done yet. Some galleries insist on slides still. Others will accept a CD or DVD. Give them what they want, no questions asked. Which ever you use, make sure it will work on a number of computers or machines. Only submit one type of art at a time. Don't submit canvas paintings, sculpture and photography at the same time. Put your most likely to get accepted first and foremost. Shows tend to follow themes so you will need a body of work to show. You might want to have at least 20-30 pieces ready. You will need a CV (a fancy name for resume) You will need an artist statement. You will need a Bio. Package these so that they look professional and if they like your work you are in. I would bone up on the art of investing in art too so that if they start talking shop you will be aware of what they are saying. Best wishes,

Create a good portfolio. Go to the gallery website or contact the gallery and ask if they encourage applications from new artists and if so, how they want to see your portfolio. Repeat that step a lot of times. If you spend some time finding out what kind of art a certain gallery prefers you can cut down on the rejections. If you have pop art a gallery which likes to represent traditional water colors is not going to be interested in your work and vice versa. Alternatively you can look for call for Artists in your community and follow the instruction how to submit your work for consideration. Usually it involves a non-refundable application fee.
