Is graffiti considered an art form?
-
is graffiti an art form or like a way of people to exspress their feelings? Or is it just trashy use of spray paint. Should there be more places for artist to draw with out any law stopping them?

Answer:
I believe graffiti is an art form when it is intended to be seen in that manner. Simply taggin' a wall with a can of paint makes it no more a work art than throwing a tomato at that same wall would be. However, "graffiti" that has color scheme, flair, style and purpose, where the word or image itself has IMPACT or meaning, yeah man, that IS ART! Some of the best Graffiti (and Graffiti artists) ever, came out of the South Bronx and Brooklyn N.Y.C. on subway cars. I loved seeing a huge piece on the side of a building and loved seeing the good stuff on the subway cars way back when. It adds to the landscape and ceratinly gives character to otherwise grim and depressing urban areas. More places and more people should be out there using it to beautify the landscape and deliver their message. F - those crAckerJaCkZ who say (in the most nasally of nasal tones) "Uhm, excuse me, but you are breaking the law sir." They are the same lames who will be paying you millions for your work once it becomes "Urban chic" after you hit it big like Kostabi.

Well I think your ? is worded wrong like most ? are about the subject. I've been graff star for about 14 years. In my earlier years I was into "tagging or graffiti" but as I've grown with my art I've learn that it was nothing more then an art from of crime. Well scent I still paint but only legal work I wouldn't call it graffiti. When someone referrers my art as graffiti I feel that it is in the same ballpark as making a slur. The root word graffiti to my understanding is vandalism. So yeah I support the movement. there should more legal wall and the word Graffiti should be dissociated with my art.

I believe that graffiti is a great art form, and many great artists have succeed in the graffiti form especially Jean-Michel Basquiat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Michel_Basquiat

it depends on where it is there are places where people are encouraged to "leave there mark" but most places consider it defacement of property

I have been a graffiti artist for 20 years and get paid for doing it.I have done pieces for artists.I know alot of artists who are fascinated by it and would also call it an art form.Graffiti will always have the stigma attached to it that it is just vandalism because there is so much crap out there and everywhere you turn you see simple tagging or scrawlings on walls which just can only be descirbed as an eye sore(mind you i can talk thats what i done for 10 years).Graffiti was made big in the Bronx in the 70's but the way it was done (illegally) had the police and most of the public declare war on graffiti artists.Even when it came to England not so long after the same thing happened.I suppose we have no one to blame because the whole thing was not just about creating a nice piece but the thrill of doing it somewhere where everyone could see it (mainly trains). To see a window down or a top to bottom riding on a train that you done the night before was the biggest thrill you could get.Because so many people were doing this it was and always will be considered an illegal act and in many peoples eyes they will never give it the respect that some of the stuff deserves.Graffiti has come a very very long way from then and some of the work produced now would leave even the best fine artist in ore. Many people know this but only the simple minded person with a one way view would deny that it is art.Everyone has their own opinion but when i get people ringing me to come do a piece somewhere or an artist wanting me to call them next time i do one because they want to watch, i know what i believe. If you dont believe me check out some graffiti web sites and look for work by: peeta, seen, aztek or insa.peace out! ebee.
