What is to be included in a high school portfolio?

In Graphic Design, portfolio school vs. degree...?

  • I heard in the graphic design field that a person is judged more based on their portfolio than their actual credentials/degree... now, i heard this from a portfolio school... is this true? more specifically in the advertisement field. So, I need your help. This school looks appetizing, 2 years and im sure i could put together a very impressive portfolio.. But, I have no degrees at all, not even a high school diploma. im asking this because i dont want to spend two years on a certificate and go out their with a GED, and a portfolio. keep in mind this may affect my decision... So please... be unbiased.

    It's true, but it's also misleading to put it so simply. On the one hand, when someone is considering hiring you, they'll judge you by your portfolio and interview. Not where you went to school, your grades, or even your references. The catch is that they have a lot of resumes to weed through quickly, and most of the time, if a quick glance at your resume shows you have no design education, they probably wont even take the time to look at your portfolio in the first place. The reasoning being that most designers who are self taught are mediocre at best. Think of it this way. If this is really what you want to do with your life, give yourself the best odds for success and get some kind of design specific education, whether it be a 2 year AA or 4 year BFA. This industry is highly competitive, don't handicap yourself if you don't have to. Best of luck! :) ..

The best way to get work in such a field is by making the best contacts. It's true how they say 'it's not what you know, it's who you know' I went into Theatre Design at a university level. I have a BFA now, but I've never been asked about it when I get hired for things. All of my jobs are through people I met while at school. All the professors there are working professionals in their field. They love to hire fresh graduates they've seen the work of while in school. Go where the best teachers are.
