How good is cold laminating for posters?

What's the best way to preserve posters if i can't frame them all?

  • I've collected several old Smokey the Bear posters and was thinking about laminating them, maybe this is a bad idea. Can't really afford to have them all mounted/framed. Don't know if they are or ever will be worth anything, i just love them. What do you think?

  • Answer:

Oh my Gosh!! Please don't ever laminate them! Being old Smokey the Bear posters gives them a certain value and laminating them would devalue them big time. Mailing tubes are ok but most of them are made out of cardboard and can potentially cause browning by acid burns. Anything made from wood: cardboard, paper etc contains acid. Perhaps you could invest in one archival storage tube and store them all together. Call a frame shop, scrap booking store, art museum, antiques dealer for a source to purchase them. Posters can also be stored flat in between two pieces of acid-free foam core ( $12.99 a board) or rag mats ( 100%cotton, $16.99 a board) taped together. I suggest you go on-line and research Smokey to determine the posters value. You may be pleasantly surprised. That can also be the deciding factor of how you eventually decide to store them. To frame a 24" x36" poster on ragboard, with UV glass, frame spacers and a inexpensive metal frame runs around $100.

Roll them up and put them in blueprint tubes. Label contents on outside. Drop in a gel bag (desiccant)

call Kinkos. I use to work there. Make sure they know what they are doing. It's not hard to ruin a good thing by not making sure the machine is tempered right. If they have any monetary value, don't do it. laminating them will ruin the value. Never laminate film or anything with a surface that can melt under hot heat - like oil base finishes. Call one of the largest kinkos in your city.

Laminating them wouldn't be a bad idea, though if it's not done right you get air bubbles and creases in the plastic. However, it's probably the cheapest way to go. I'd say look around and find a place that has high repute, that people like going to. You're more likely to get better quality that way. You can also try speaking to people at the laminating shop, or with people who do framing and ask them for a viable, inexpensive method that looks good.

I know some collectors use like a sort of set of drawers, so you can lay them out flat.

Olympic Flame

Shrink wrap the posters with a piece of foamcore for support. That's pretty cheap.
