Are art internships usually paid or unpaid?

Does anyone know of any art/curatorial internships?

  • I am planning to major in art history but am having trouble finding summer internships in the field. I'm willing to work anywhere for free but am especially interested in art from the 1930s to the 1980s.

  • Answer:

Have you tried the listings on the American Association of Museums website? www.aam-us.org. Internships would probably be listed in Aviso, in the job listings. The only other places that I know of are www.museumjobs.com and usajobs.opm.gov (actual paying jobs). I'm not sure about Aviso, but you can register with Museumjobs.com for free and they'll send you new listings. I would talk to every art museum anywhere near you. If they don't have a need (everybody needs an intern, but they can't always see a way to find the time to supervise someone) they may be able to make a suggestion. Usajobs lists every federal job, including the various Smithsonian museums. There are probably separate internship listings. However, if you could find a way to get paid, even if its just enough to live somewhere, that would be great, wouldn't it? A lot of the internships or paying jobs for next summer won't be listed for a few more months. Don't give up! Just keep looking and keep bugging your local museums. Something will turn up.
