Film Editor or Graphic Designer?

  • Before I say anything, I have read that these two professions are always the generic ones kids want to be before they go to school and get a degree, but I must beg to differ. I've been editing since I was about 11, and that was my whole world until I took graphic design in high school. Since then I've had less time for video editing, graphic design became my new interest, seeing that I was able to learn, practice, and excel every day. However, I'm now having to think of my future because I don't have much time left before I have to decide where I want to go to college and what I want to be, so I need some advice. Because I would love having either profession, my decision comes down to income. I hate that money has to be my deciding factor, but I want to raise the same family I was raised with, but that means I can't be making the national average wage of around 40K. I'm not saying that's bad, because I am aware that it will take many years in the field to generate a desirable wage. However, with that in mind, which profession will pay more further down the road? I am asking this because the internet is saying that a graphic designer's starting wage is much higher than a film/video editor's starting wage. However, it points out that an experienced film editor can make much more money than an experienced graphic designer. I don't trust the internet for facts, I would rather ask people with knowledge and experience in this field, hence why I have posted a question. I am in the dark here so I would very much appreciate it if someone would help me out. Also, if this question would be better suited for another category, please let me know. I want as much feedback as I can get. I know this is a long question, but I'll leave you by saying that this will only lean my decision so much. In the end I will go for which ever one I enjoy most.

I'm neither so my answer won't do you much good but hey it's a reply.. I'd say the info on the internet is somehow accurate, it's what I think too to be true. so instead of money the decisive element would be talent. but maybe you're talented in both areas. so we have to look for the practical approach. I think when starting a profession, the graphic design is easier as you can do small assignments and show it to others. that way people can see your work. I think this is harder in film editing. still, I think you should go for film editing (maybe cuz I can relate to film myself, wanted to be director), dunno why. btw kudos for your writing/spelling and formulating your question. no doubt you're talented in many areas.
