Why is the art movement Pop Art called Pop Art? (the reason behind the name)?

Pop artists were drawing their inspiration from popular icons and recognisable, commercial images from their time e.g. Warhol and his feature of Marilyn Monroe, the Campbell's soup can (a brand image that was popular and recognisable). The style appealed to the consumerist culture that was booming during the 60's because it represented the popular culture of the time, and hence the name. Definition: Pop Art is an art movement renowned for its use of figural imagery and the replication of everyday objects. It is a generation, a culture, an influential style, and the epitome of a consumerist atmosphere and way of life that people associated with the sixties.

pop art was derived from popular culture i.e. music cinema and celebrity and usually describes an artistic era that took place largely in the sixties. however there are more recent examples that might fall under the pop art genre.
