What should I include in my art portfolio that will impress tattoo artists?

  • The guy will give me an official apprenticeship for free. All he asks is that I pay him back with respect and donate some time to the shop and be determined to do it. I already called the shop and told them I was interested in apprenticeship. The guy says he wants to talk to me around noon tomorrow and that I should bring a portfolio of my artwork. I have a portfolio, but I don't know what more to put in it. What do tattoo artists like to see in portfolios?

    I know exactly what tattoo artists like to see in samples of artwork, A3 size flash sheets with lots of themed designs all arranged on the sheet. Tribal, celtic and evil demon tattoos aswell as skulls are all very popular, as is dolphins and girly tattoos too. Your portfolio samples need to look professional and laminated to avoid damage, but for the sake of the future you need to be thinking about a website too, as more and more tattoo shops are getting online now and a good selection of a tattoo artists work online in your own website could be a portfolio in itself. Tattoo artists always want something original to put on their walls, some designs that they can't find anywhere else, especially in your local town. Later on down the road you may want to specialize in what ever you really like to draw as this could be your trademark as a tattoo designer. I know that sometimes they like to see Dragons because there are a lot of people that do not have the skill to draw dragons................also you might want to take a photo of someone and draw it because a lot of times people will bring in a photo of someone to put on their body Hope this helps! ~JP

I am just guessing here, but if I was an artist looking for an apprentice I would want to see unique designs in their portfolio that show their skills. I would also want to see some classic designs like the sparrow or the pin up girl whatever fits your style
