Which are the best art galleries in London? (incl. commercial galleries)?

Most of them have been listed above, but you should also visit The Wallace Collection Sir John Soanes Museum The Victoria and Albert Museum The Dulwich Picture Gallery. The main commercial galleries are around Cork Street, in Mayfair. You can get a copy of Galleries Guide at one of them (it's free) and work through the listings in it.

National gallery is the best for traditional art, and full of masterpieces of all centuries. There is an amazing collection of the old school. For me, my favourite is Tate Britain, which is famous for contemporary art. It's so vibrant, full of life, and multi-dimentional. I like short films they show in small studios: some of them are black and white, some of them are silent, but they always make you think.

Begin with The National on Trafalgar Square. Go to St Martin's in the Field's crypt for a really cheap and filling lunch. Then head next door to the National Portrait Gallery. A good five hours worth of art. Free. (The lunch isn't)

National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery within walking distance of each other, Trafalgar Square. Both are superb. Queens Gallery at the left hand end of Buckingham Palace is at the other end of The Mall (gallery misnamed: the items in it, eg Leonardo drawings, belong to the people and are looked after for them by Her Maj.). Royal Academy specials/blockbusters are always good value, Piccadilly. For real art these are the top four, in my estimation, and "tate" is short for potato where I come from, as it happens, an unattractive vegetable.

Went to see 'Face of Fashion' at The National Portrait Gallery yesterday and it was fantastic. Also lots more to see in there for free. Tate Modern is also a favourite of mine.

The Tate and Tate Modern are the best, along with the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square.
