Graphic design jobs/colleges?
-
I am a sophomore in high school, and I am extremely advanced at graphic design. I plan to go into graphic design as a major. I am trying to find the best colleges/universities that offer classes in graphic design, but I can't find any. Can someone find the best colleges to consider when going into graphic design? Also, since my dad just lost his job, I am trying to get some extra money by getting a job of my own. I am sixteen, so I will be able to work in most places. Does anyone know if/how I can get some work in a field closely related to graphic design? I don't want to get a job working at hyvee or something boring. Help???

Hi Nevada You're best bet is to to apply to your local printing companies or places like Kinko or where they offer printing in general. That is how I started and today, I have my own business and do lots of freelance work. At least, if you work in a printing company, you get to meet many contacts and most companies who do have work printed is because, they are business owners. You never know, who can ask you or hire you on the side to do artwork for them. I got many offers and built up my customers like that. Eventually, I was bringing work to the company I was working for and made lots of extra cash. The boss gave me wholesale price and I resold it with a markup. Don't limit yourself. If you say you are good, you have to touch all asset of printing. I specialized in commercial and label printing which is a different technology and yuo have to know how to compensate for the stretching and contraction in flexible label materials. That is all part of doing correct prepress work. One last thing, you can go towards Commercial & Industrial Architecture etc... Sky is the limit. Good Luck

First of all, you never told us what area you lived in...if you are looking for a local school, we don't know where to begin. If you want a top notch design school, try SCAD (Savannah College of ARt & Design). This is a great school for the arts. There are two locations; One in Savannah, GA and one in Atlanta, GA. It is expensive but very reputable! As far as making a few bucks, put together a Portfolio or or cd with your work and shop it around. A good place to start is craigslist in your area. There are always graphics jobs for freelance available. Also, check out your local newspaper want ads. Good Luck!
