How to print my own T-shirts?

How can I screen print/ silk screen tshirts myself?

  • Answer:

although there must be more modern methods, i learned silk screening in junior high school. we stretched the screen material over a wooden frame and stapled it in place. the material must be tight and wrinkle free. then we used a thick rubber squeegee to push the ink through the screening. the actual image was created using a special film that was applied to the screen that we had cut out using a razor blade knife. you cut the reverse or negative areas out so that ink can pass through. it would be hard to do sophisticated multi color designs in this method if it required tight registration between the colors. i am sure you can buy all the supplies at a silk screen supply house.

It's not too hard to do, but it can be tricky to get exactly right, so don't expect perfection from the start. You can buy a kit, like from Speedball. Or you can make your own screen and do it all yourself. This is the best walk-through of the process I've seen online: http://www.diehippiedie.com/screwball/diyshirt.html

If you go to a craft shop or hobbie store they usually have kits for screenprinting...they are usually inexpensive and easy to use. If you start with these to get the idea of the art you can order more expensive and professional kits that can be used from home.
