Which program is better for Kinetic Typography?

  Generally speaking, good and free rarely go together in software. One of the best programs in the industry is Adobe After Effects. The software has a bit of a learning curve, but there's free tutorials online at their website. On the downside, it's $999 unless you can get a student discount. Apple also makes a competing program, Motion, that's part of Final Cut Studio 2. Motion is arguably better for video manipulation, but the kinetic typography controls aren't as good as After Effects. There is a free open source equivalent out there, called Blender. The array of tools and features is comparable to professional programs, but unfortunately the user interface is rather lacking (as is true with most open source software). I think Blender would definitely be worth checking out before investing in a much more expensive program, but don't be surprised if you get frustrated trying to use it.
