Do you think graffiti is art or vandalism?

i myself find it is the best artwork there is around but its in all the wrong places, ok on the sides of old cracked and falling down units i find it amazing some of the artwork you find like the other day i saw this massive angel, i do find it made the whole building look way better than the old yellowish peeling paint it used to have, but i HATE the graffiti thats just like a name or something bad about someone else like whats the go with that are ya just to scared and girly to say it to their face bcuz u know you will end up on ya bum bleedin from the nose, and why do trains complian they get some of the best artwork down the side its even better than there original look i think but only if its really nice graffiti, i only find some graffiti vandalism if it doesnt look good or its in the wrong place like on nice looking buildings or if its just a name or something about someone but i dont mind if it is a phrase or statement about something meaningful! i myself am i quit talented graffiti artist but only do it on massive pieces of wood i buy and take home i have never done it on the street. so i find graffiti a art more than vandalism what do you think? thanks in advance everyone!!!

Answer:
graff art is some of the best art. everyone of course has their own views on what they think is considered art and what isn't, but i do agree that meaningless words and gang affiliated ugly scribbles are vandalism. but scenes and artworks and pictures and maybe a girlfriend's name or something of that sort is really amazing. <a href="http://s187.photobucket.com/albums… target="_blank"><img src="http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/… border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x264/ilyalyssax3/mfjgrihojvbds-1.jpg idk if that showed or this one <a href="http://s187.photobucket.com/albums… target="_blank"><img src="http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/… border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x264/ilyalyssax3/Miss_Van_y_Ciou_aikijuanma-1.jpg but i think those are pretty unique and cool. and even names http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x264/ilyalyssax3/Miss_Van_y_Ciou_aikijuanma-1.jpg all graffiti on public and city property is illegal and considered vandalism by law and authorities. but it's up to the individual themselves to really decide whether the graff is really trash, or artwork in their opinion.

Its art when its not being done in the wrong way. Anything can be made bad or good. Its vandalism when its done for bad purposes and when you're vandalising property that doesn't belong to you.

Graffiti, while it may be Art, when done without the painted object owners permission, is vandalism. Some of the best freehand artwork I have seen is done with a spray paint can. But, by the same token, if the owner of the property has spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on paint for their building, rail car (most are painted with expensive anti-corrosion paint), or other object, they certainly do not want to have to go to the added expense of paying someone to remove what someone else put on without their permission. You do have an interesting point that some looks great on the rail cars or buildings, but how would you feel if I came to your house and painted what ever I wanted on your house or your car? I may like what I have done, but you may not find it very appealing. If the taggers could/would get together with the railroad car owners and get permission, that could start a whole new trend, perhaps even competitions. That would be interesting seeing as how some rail cars go from New England, to the South, to the West Coast and back again. I applaud you for having the decency to keep your work on materials you have purchased, perhaps you should take pictures of it and go around your town and see if some business owners would care to sponsor you doing some art work on their buildings? There is a lot of money to be made in doing things like that. Thank you for keeping it legal with what you do... Perhaps one day we will all get to view your work :) Peace and Fair Journeys Wolfy

Any graffiti is vandalism! Well unless you got permission to do it.

I agree with you. Graffiti is amazing, but it can be used, and is used a lot in a vandalism, but if you have ever been to Venice Beach in California, they have whole buildings with Graffiti design and it is stunning. But in a perspective of how it is used, I think it is wrong, Graffiti shouldn't be used on property to prove some kind of point, it should be respected as art, and I think Graffiti could go a long way if Graffiti artists were more legal with their artwork.
