How to make apparent wind work for you?

Using wind going through pipes to make a sound sculpture...but how do I do it?!?

  • Im about to start work on an abstract stainless steel sculpture of a person blowing a horn, its about 5.5 meters high, i want to have the wind blow in through a hole in the back of the head and out the end of the horn to make sound but im not exactly sure how. the length of the hole from the back of the head to the end of the horn will be approx 2 meters long. Was thinking about fitting pipes of different lengths inside, but is it actually that simple?! Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

  • Answer:

The problem I see, having worked with wind and sound, is that the pressure of wind is much less than the pressure of breath so if you try to use the horn to make or transmit the sound, you will not be able to hear the sound over the wind. I think you will find, and you will have to test this, is that you are going to have to include the pipes to make the sound in the sculpture in such a way that the ends stick up above or flush with the top of the sculpture so that wind from any direction can blow across the tops. Then you will have to cut lengths of pipe (conduit is probably the cheapest) to get tones you want - perhaps taking clues from organ pipes. Then work on the best material for the pipes including variant thicknesses of stainless steel and brass. Then you will have to mount the pipes so they enhance the vibration caused by the air. Of course the pipes will have to be open so water will not collect in the bottom and a drain provided out of the structure. You might be able to include in your structure a portion with disks like two parens )( but horizontal so the wind blowing from any direction would be accelerated and cause more air movement from a tube in the middle, giving you more pressure/velocity.

One that I found to be impressive in it simplicity was using PVC pipe and shop vacuum cleaners. But instead of sucking in air the were set to blow air out. There were eight in all,as in do ra mi fa so la te do. Each length of pipe was cut to a length to produce the correct note. They all had holes cut with sheet metal fipples in place Flipples being the wedge shaped piece of a whistle at the opening. http://www.chiffandfipple.com/Reyburn.htm The pipes were producing a low pitch reminding me of a tone similar to that of a fog horn all in harmony. Wish I could recall the name of the artist for you.
