Is it better to use newspaper or printer paper for paper mache?
-
I want to use printer paper because I won't have to use so many layers of paint and I think it'll just look better, but someone told me that newspaper makes it stiffer, is that true? I think it would just be the same. Oh, and I just want to let people know who are reading this that 1 cup of cornstarch, 1/2 cup of water, and a 1/2 of glue is THE BEST paper mache mixture ever!!!! First pour the cornstarch, then the water and mix as best you can. (it's kind of tuff because with just cornstarch and water that is Oobleck, which is a liquid and a solid so it might take a while to mix well) Then pour the glue in, mix, and, ta-dah, the best paper mache mixture ever! Okay, so anyways, printer paper...or newspaper??? THANKS!!! :D

Answer:
Comparing printer paper and newspaper i would say newspaper because it's thinner. The thinner it is the more glue it absorbs, therefore making it harder. If you want even more stiffness you should try sticking in a layer of squares of denim. It sounds crazy but it's actually really strong, because it absorbs more glue than newspaper, on account of being fabric. I usually put a layer of newspaper then denim and another layer of newspaper on top of the denim just to get a smoother texture. also i strongly suggest cutting out squares instead of strips because then there wouldn't be any of those awkward bumps you get from strips.

My instinct says newspaper... that's all I've ever used. However, I think you should do a test run with printer paper just so you know what it's like. The only way to know for sure is to experiment with it! Thanks for the recipe =)

Newspaper makes a pulpier medium, which means that wetted it stretches and molds better. You can use any kind of paper if you want a particular effect, but printer paper is likely to give you flat spots or plains that you did not have in mind. Newspaper when torn gives a thin feather edge. Printer paper has a distinct tear line in one direction and forms a thick edge.

I like newspaper because it is softer and lays down better, The other will work as well. I usually alternate newspaper with paper towels so I can keep track of how many layer I have. Also wet one layer then put a dry layer on that and then another wet layer. It doesn't get as soggy and dries faster.
