Is it possible to use plaster of paris without a mold?

Where can I buy a life like size comedy and tragedy mold to use with plaster of paris?

  • All I can find are tiny candy molds of these masks and I'd like a full size mold. I am an artist and this is my favorite to paint. I am tired of paying nearly $20 per mask and would love to be able to find a good mold to make myself. Thanks!

  • Answer:

plaster bandages google making mask using plaster bandages, also check you-tube here an example link which looks useful. http://www.make-stuff.com/projects/plaster_masks.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjdWH1G1GSA If you want to do that a number of times you should then use a mold of your face to make a casting of your face out of plaster. Then you don't have to use your face, you can use the copy of your face to make additional mask. You can then also use methods/materials you wouldn't use on your face because they take too long to dry/cure like paper mache or latex.

Buy another pair. Paint them up with latex mold compound to make a flexible mold. Back the rubber with plaster to preserve the overall form of the mold while the latex preserves the details. Lift off the plaster, peel off the latex, set the latex in the plaster, pour plaster into the latex and when it sets, peel off the latex and you have your first copy - of many.
