What is plaster of paris?

What is plaster of paris? Is it same with the white cement in hardware store for plaster celling?

  • Im looking for plaster of paris for life casting.....anyone know where to get in Malaysia? Thanks.

  • Answer:

No, it is probably not the stuff for ceilings. If that is marked just Plaster, then it definitely is not. Plaster of Paris sets hard in a short time when water is added and it is properly mixed. Plaster used on walls dries, the difference being that if it is wetted, it gets soft again and if thick, it takes a long time to dry. Plaster of Paris should be available at paint and hardware stores because it does have construction uses and at craft stores. Be very careful in using it to mold body parts because it gets hot when setting and if there is a mass of it, it gets very hot. Recently there was a horrible report of a student who lost 8 fingers and suffered a lot of pain from the boiling of her hands when she misunderstood her teacher and embedded her hands in a large bucket/block of plaster instead of making a layer.

Plaster of Paris is also called "gypsum", perhaps that will help you find it. Another possibility - especially for your purposes - is to get plaster bandages, those used to make medical casts for broken arms and legs. Sources are pharmacies, or ask at a hospital. Ask also about how exactly to water the cast (water temperature, for how long, etc.) as that may differ.
