How to make hair out of clay?

How do I make a basic clay doll?

  • Hi. I'm a beginner, interested in teaching a doll making workshop as a craft for church. I kind of want to imitate God making Adam, so I'm very interested in using clay. I found Sculpey clay in skin tone colors, which is cool. I also found some doll mold faces, hands, and feet. I'd like to keep this as simple as possible, and am trying to figure out how I would make the bodies. Are there molds for that? Can hair be painted on? Is there baking involved? Suggestions, please. Thanks.

  • Answer:

do you want them to be realistic? I'd suggest not, sculptors work their whole live for that. Will they be clothed? (I know Adam won’t be) but for a clothed figure, you just make the shape of the clothes underneath and drape them with really thin polymer. I suggest you check out books by Maureen Carlson, she is the master of this sort of polysculpting. (she has a line of molds out too, the faces you have might be hers, as many of them are.) Go to eBay or Amazon and check out her name for great deals on her books. Actually I just remembered, there’s a bunch of tutorials about Polymer on Utube. Use a phrase like tutorial, sculpting, or polymer clay to find one.
