What is the Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome made out of?

  • a link would be great

  • Answer:

Of the columns supporting the nave thirty-six are marble and four granite. Those that are Athenian marble may be from the previous temple at that site which was to the goddess Cybele. The ceilings are gilded gold, the columns are topped with bronze, and the walls are covered in mosaics, some going back to the fourth century. The Marian column erected in 1614 in thanksgiving for remission of the plague during the Baroque era is the sole remaining column from Constantine's Basilica.
