Was Gustave Eiffel famous before he created the Eiffel Tower?

Gustave Eiffel is famous for building the Eiffel Tower. But was he famous before or did he just get choosen to do it when he was a nobody?? ( I know how he got chosen but I want to know if he was famous or not before).

Yes - if you look carefully at his biography you will find that he had built some large bridges of the same material as proposed for the Tower - maybe famous is too strong a word, but he certainly had a good reputation among people who judged whether he could do the tower.
