Answer:
TRY HERE? http://www.members.shaw.ca/applytech/at/eiffel.htm Materials/Safety and Criteria Materials for Tower: 1/4 inch doweling (you buy them in 3 foot lengths); lots of newspaper and masking tape; stiff wire (coat hangars would work - I recommend buying a roll of wire that can be bent yet retains its shape (I paid $4.39 for a roll at a hardware store)). plastic straws (or popsicle sticks), stiff paper, glue guns and glue and pins; wire snippers or wire-cutting pliers; Safety: Please advise students on use of glue guns and that the wire can cut your hands and poke eyes. I've used this same wire to make wire art (for example, a basketball player). I taped each end of the wire for safety. Procedure and Homework Ideas Production Procedure: Students should work in groups of 3 to 4. Making the main legs or outside steel structure - take a piece of newspaper and place the doweling on it. The doweling should work from 1 corner to the opposite. Take the corner edge and start rolling the paper tightly. Once rolled into a tight tube tape the final corner so it doesn't come undone. Slip the doweling out. Place a length of wire through the tube and tape one end so it doesn't come out. Slowly, bend the wire/tube into the same shape as the tower (as in the design drawing - check distance from chord to wire/tube). Make 5 wire/tube pieces and bend all into shape. Take the untaped ends and tape 4 pieces together at the top (sort of like several candles hanging together.) Make a base - the 4 pieces, of course, can't stand up yet. Take the 5th piece and bend into a perfect square. Slip the square over the 4 pieces of wire and move toward the untaped end. Attach each leg to a corner with string and wire. Using either pins or glue guns/glue begin to create a series of triangular structures down each side to strengthen the tower. As students place the straws on they will be able to visualize the angle at which they sit. Small pieces of stiff paper can be cut to match the angle of the straws and be used as a joint strengthener. Continue to cut and place straws along the tower. The actual base of the Eiffel Tower is curved pieces of steel. With a Grade 7 class we bent the fence wire into a parabolic curve and taped it to the legs. This provided beautiful strength to the base of the tower. Use a small heavy weight to test the tower. Use a small bucket with wire handle (or put 2 plastic honey container together) and use heavy rocks. Suspend from center of tower with doubled-up string. Hope this helps!God bless you and yours!
