Does "Rose Art modeling clay" dry out or bake?

Does Rose art modeling clay Harden?

  • Please help :D

  • Answer:

No it does not harden. However...It is s really nice clay for sculpting (IF) you are planning on making a mother mold from your sculpture for bronzes and or cold cast bronzes with the intention of making multiple copies for limited editions. IE.... More money. Many artists such as myself love it. I started out with a homemade version it (plasticine) that I used over and over again, made from a mixture of dry clay, wax, clean motor oil and a cup of axle grease. Wanting to do large life-size sculptures of people, I purchased 1500 pounds of Rose-Art, which was much more than I needed and I ended up giving blocks of it away to inspiring artists so they could "play" with it. They all had a great time with it and saved many of their "soft" sculptures As-Is. I have too because I haven't gotten a chance to make molds from them. They are all still workable though, if they get damaged. If used for it's intended purpose, the fact that Rose-Art or any other oil based clay never hardens is a good thing not a bad one.

Rose art is not a great brand but even so if its modeling clay it should not harden at least for some time. Depending on if its covered or not. Even if its left in the open air it for a long period of time(1yr.) It will just get a kind of thick like skin but will not harden.

It is probably an oil based clay and will say not to fire it on the package. Check the package to see if it is oil based or not. If it is oil based it will not dry or harden. Don't put it in the oven if it says that it isn't, it will release some pretty noxious fumes. If you want a modeling clay that will harden (or air dry) you should try sculpey, fimo or primo clay. They are polymer based and can be fired in the oven. You can also make dough modeling clay yourself, recipes abound online, that will dry as well. Good Luck!
