How do you make paper mache?

How to make permanent paper mache?

  • I'm interested in making some paper mache things, but don't really want to use the same method I did when I was younger of mixing water and flour as the flour would sort of get moldy after too long. My plan was to use the water and glue method, which will work with a water soluble glue (so that they can actually mix) But I'm making a mask, so when it dries, won't it get messed up if it gets wet at all? Like if it gets rained on or anything? Is there a better paper mache recipe to keep this permanent than water and glue, OR (if you don't have another recipe suggestion) is there something I can coat the finished mask with (after the glue-based paper mache and being painted with acryclics) to seal it from water damage? I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible.

  • Answer:

Clear coat it with something like krylon or lacquer. If you don't want it shiny, then get flat. Several coats all over ought to do it.

How about using resin with paper? You could make your shape with clay and then stick torn pieces of paper on to it with resin, maybe the type used for casting. Or you could use shellac, or PVA glue. PVA is excellent for craft work, and the quality used for building and wood work is extremely durable. It is tough and water-proof, even though water soluble before it has set. Although flexible, when several layers are used and dried in between, they form a hard plastic, which would make a very durable mask - and it would not go soft or moldy. Good luck with your craft projects!
