What is the best kind of pastel chalk?

What kind of paint to use on (chalk?) ceramics? Can I sand it?

  • My boyfriend's mom had come across a ceramic (presumably made of chalk) pig in a yard sale. However, the pig is missing a lot of paint in sections and she wanted me to repaint it and make it look nice. What kind of paint should/can I use on this thing? I have acrylic paints, but I didn't know if I could use them. Also, can I use sandpaper or something else to get the paint that is already on there off? Or do I just have to paint over it?

  • Answer:

Presuming it is painted and not glazed you can repaint it. Acrylics will work. It is a pain to sand off old stuff. Instead use something like Kills It to prime it before you paint it. If it is glazed just dump it.

Other answers

"ceramic (presumably made of chalk) pig " No, not presumably made of chalk - ceramics is fired clay and has nothing to do with chalk (calcium carbonate) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk If it is missing coloring it is almost certainly painted and you can sand it off. Ceramic glazes are fired on and while they will chip, they will normally not flake off.
