What is the best kiln to get?

Beginner at pottery, Should i get a kiln?

  • I started doing pottery about 3 years ago and recently became familiar with the wheel. My parents want to buy me a wheel, but i was wondering if I should buy a kiln with it. Are they hard to use? Do they need a lot of care? I'm asking b/c i found a used wheel online that comes with a kiln. Thanks

    Depends whether you have another option to fire what you make. Also depends how sure you are you are going to stick with it. If you have a place where you can get your work fired for a reasonable price go there, don't buy a kiln. They don't necessarily need a lot of care, but you need a well vented space and a reasonably fireproof space and might need an extra electric outlet, not your standard one. If you don't make a lot and the kiln is too big you either waste a lot of electricity by firing a half empty kiln or you have to wait a long time between firing. If you haven't needed a kiln in the last 3 years of doing pottery odds are you don't need one now either.

If the price is right go for it, wheels and kilns are both expensive to buy new. but you need to be sure the electricity in your home (or where ever) is compatible, like 110 or 220. and the right outlet for the type of plug it has. know that a kiln takes a long time to fire most things, which can be expensive on your power bill. you will probably need a couple of firing lessons, which you can usually get from a local ceramics shop or local kiln dealer if not there are a few videos I was able to find online. (the person who used it would be a great help). you have to learn how to load it. and it needs to be placed where the heat build up won't set your house on fire. but other than that there simple. My friend learned how to use hers from the local high school art teacher.
