Is there a difference btween clay & polymer clay?

  • Is there a difference btween clay & polymer clay? If so, what is it?

  • Answer:

Yes. Basically ceramic clay needs to be fired in a kiln and clay bodies are made of a combination of different natural clays and chemicals. Clays are derived from granite originally. The combinations depend on the firing temperature of the clay: low fire (cone 06), mid range high fire (cone 6) and high fire (cone 10) and the general purpose of the clay body. Polymer clay is based on polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It usually doesn't have any clay minerals in it. It has pigments added to it as well as some kind of liquid plasticizer. It is mold-able like clay and it can be baked in a home oven or toaster oven at much lower temperatures. To further complicate things, there is also oil-based modeling clay, often called plasticine. It is made of combinations of oil, waxes and clay minerals. It is not soluble in water, it doesn't dry out, allowing the artist to work and rework the clay almost endlessly. It is not to be fired in a kiln or baked in an oven. It also comes in many colors.
