Is resin stronger than plastic?

I can I use polyester resin in a plastic mold?

  • I heard that polyester resin is used to bond plastic. I am a little worried because I have a plastic ball coming in the mail that I want to pour this polyester resin in. The ball I am using isn't made for casing at all. Is this a problem? If it is, is there something I can coat the inside of the ball with so it doesn't bond with the resin?

I agree with Kinematic, never cast anything without a release agent. I've used professional release agents & just door lock sprays (which are a lot cheaper but work just as good.) But I would also do a secondary cast first as K' said, have you ever tried pouring rubber molds? Like Pour-A-Mold? Try the link below. Its messy stuff, but works great. I'm curious though what the "ball" is made of, you just might be able to get away with casting the resin in it, if it's not expensive & you don't have a deadline, you should try a test piece, then go for it. I just want to see if it works so let us know. =) it just might work?

Release agents help, but the concern is the heat that is generated. I would do a secondary cast of the piece perhaps in foam latex or better yet is dental compound (but very expensive), and then cast the secondary cast into something like plaster. In all casting you should use a release agent.
