How do you remove clay correctly from a mold?

How can i make a mold for polymer clay.. with polymer clay?

  • I'm thirteen and I like to make things with polymer clay. Recently though I've been looking in to deco den and I want to make some little molds like cookies and sweets so I can just make things really easily. I was thinking about getting the Sculpey mold maker but I saw some people on YouTube that had molds they made with polymer clay and I thought that would be better instead of wasting ten dollars to make a couple of molds. I've tried it a few times but every time the thing gets stuck or the mold gets messed up. How do I do it without the mold getting messed up or the item getting stuck in the clay? Thank you!

  • Answer:

Sculpey Mold Maker creates a slightly flexible mold, but you can use ordinary polymer clay to make a more rigid mold. Spray the Mold Maker clay or polymer clay mold with water before applying the clay. This prevents sticking an doesn't leave a powdery residue on the clay.

I've made moulds out of Fimo by pressing an item in a lump to make the mould, firing it and then pressing more Fimo in for the object and firing again. Remember, any mould you have should have a light dusting of something like talk or cornflour to prevent sticking.

To make a mold of polymer clay, you have to bake the mold to make it rigid and you won't ruin the mold, but with a rigid mold, you have to be sure that the molded object has no undercuts to trap it in the mold and some angles for relief would be nice. But if the mold is rigid, pushing soft clay into it will, at worst, only damage the copy somewhat and you may be able to repair it and still use the mold to make copies of most of what you want. For complicated copies, you have to have flexible molds
