What is the best kiln to get?

How do i get the best results out of a wood fired kiln?

  • I have good white box wood available to me to fire my kiln which is the best design to build for wood fired kiln. also is it possible to use clay as a morter for laying the bricks to build the kiln should i add anything to the clay for this purpose. The clay available to me is out of my garden and its is beige in color and is very plastic. does not seem to have any large materials incorporated in it. in general it seems like a natural potters clay, i feel i could throw this clay straight out of the ground, it is very fine and very plastic for the want of a better description. any help would be greatly appreciated. Harry .

  • Answer:

check out "the kiln book" (by fred olsen) from the library. It will explain various designs for kilns and why it is important to build them in a particularly way (e.g. height of chimney is important to get right amount of draft). As far as the clay in your garden is concerned: Without knowing its melting point I would not use it. If it happens to have a low melting point it may melt during your first firing causing mayhem...
