How to make homemade modeling clay?

How can you make modeling clay dry?

  • My art teacher gave the class modeling clay to make sculptures and we were supposed to paint them in class, but they never dried. (my teacher doesn't know modeling clay doesn't dry) i really wanted to paint mine because i worked really hard on it. what are some ways you can make modeling clay dry?

  • Answer:

Oil based modeling clay will not dry and will not turn flaky (as stated in #3 answer) and it can't really be painted. I have plasticine clay models that I have had for years without damage. If heated they turn oily and mushy. If you want to have a copy of what you modeled, you can learn to make either a plaster or a latex mold - depending on the undercuts of the model - and then make a plaster copy to paint. And someone needs to check out that teacher's training in art.
