Is it possible to use plaster of paris without a mold?

Can you use your hands to mold plaster of paris?

  • I've heard that it's dangerous to mix plaster of paris with your hands because of the reaction between the plaster and water. Can I apply plaster of paris with my hands after I mix it? If so, how will I know when it's safe to use?

  • Answer:

I've worked with plaster quite a bit, making molds, carving and I can't say that I've ever heard that about plaster. As far as I know there shouldn't be any problem using your hands to apply the plaster. It does generate a little heat initially but nothing in the least harmful. It will however be a mess . To help in preventing it from sticking to the hairs on your hands coat them with some Vaseline, unless you are planning to use gloves.. And you will have to work fast because it is setting up. Hmm. Then it seems I have tough skin The America artist George Segal used plaster treated gauze applied to the people that were the forms for his sculpture. http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0WTefTQkpJM5n4ARv.JzbkF?fr2=sg-gac&sado=1&p=george%20segal%20sculpture&fr=ush-ans&ei=utf-8&x=wrt

Do not do that, you could end with serious burns. While plaster or paris dries there's a exothermic reaction, that means that heat is released at high temperatures.
