  • Answer:

Depends on what type of clay you are using. If you are using clay that will be fired. Starting over is a good ideal. Get rid of the peanut butter jar and mold it the best that you can freehand. You may have already put too much water in the clay mix or you may not have kneaded it long enough as certain areas dried quicker that other areas causing the cracking. Take your time, use your hands to feel the consistency of the clay. You might want to try using a rolling pin withe rubber bands on each end so that the walls of your vessel can be rolled out evenly. Use a mushy mixture of clay and water, called slip, then attache the ends together. Slip kinda works like glue. Loosely cover your piece with plastic so the it won't dry out too fast. After about two days remove the plastic and let the piece dry completely before firing. Hope this helps.

it could be the type of clay and the lack moisture in the room, or as you mention covering jar, the jar could contract or expand causing deformation of clay, check the conditions for clay being used and how it is suppose to dry, if too dry it would cause cracking, suggest not leaving on jar to dry, but remove from jar in half sections and place together, or remove jar out of clay depends on design, ..

The clay dried and started to shrink while on the peanut butter jar Start again. You can use the jar but wrap it in a paper that can slip off. After you form the clay, Take it off the jar. The clay will dry and shrink after you remove it from the jar. I don't know about the clay you are using but the clay I use will shrink 20 percent from when I form it, till it has been high fired
