Can you scrub clay off a mug?

Can you scrub clay off a mug?

  • I am painting a mug in ceramics class. I accidently painted the bottom of the mug too. It mug has not been glazed fired but it has been drying for 5 days. Will I be able to get the paint off of the bottom of the mug? p.s. i used underglaze

  • Answer:

If I remember correctly underglaze isn't a problem as it does not contain a glass former. It's the glass which makes something stick to a kiln shelf. But the kiln shelf should also be painted with kiln wash. But as I may remember wrong check with your teacher. If your mug is bisque fired you can wash it off with a sponge.

yes. you will most likely be able to scrub glaze off your piece, using a wet sponge. some of the underglaze will probably not come off though.

try using 100% pure acitone(sp?) nail posish remover and then the scrubby side of a sponge

You can wash it off or sand it off. The color will not all come off, but the majority of the glaze will so it won't stick to the kiln rack.
