What is the best way to make clay coils?

• for ceramics, i have to make a coil pot. my coils always turn out lumpy and uneven. what is the best technique to make rounder long coils that dont crack? [just using hands, not coil presses]

  Even pressure. You are not using even pressure on the coils. When you roll out coils, you are pressing and releasing when rolling, you need to use very even pressure the entire time. My advice is practice practice practice. If you had a slab roller, roll out a very thick slab, cut the slab into strips, and roll each strip round. You will be able to feel the difference when a prefect coil is rolled against your fingers.
