Paper mache with white paper towels?

How do I make a paper mache bucket?

  • I need to make a paper mache bucket that will stand up on its own. I have never made anything with paper mache before, but I would like to start. How do I make the glue, and the paper mache part, and how do I keep it from sticking to the bucket because I want to remove the bucket once the paper mache is done. Please be specific.

Making a paper mache bucket should be easy, especially if you have a metal or plastic bucket to use as a mold. To begin, cover the outside of the bucket with a plastic bag so the paste won't stick to it. If there are too many creases, you can use plastic tape to cover them. Then mix up a bowl of paste, made from plain white flour and water. It should be about the consistency of cream. If you need your bucket to be especially strong, you can add some white glue or carpenter's glue to your paste. Then begin to cover the bucket with paper strips that have been dipped in the paste (wipe off the excess paste on the side of your bowl). You will need each paper layer to dry completely before adding a new one. Three layers would be strong enough to stand on it's own, but may be too fragile for your use. If you need it to be stronger, just add more layers. A faster way (and not really cheating) is to make a form using cardboard. You can use your bucket as a template and cut out one big piece for the sides, and one round piece for the bottom. Tape the pieces together with masking tape (use lots). The cover both the inside and outside with two layers of paper mache. It will probably be strong enough to stand on. You can add a wire handle if you like. I used this technique to make a paper mache mask, and it's really surprising how strong it is. You can see it at http://ultimatepapermache.com/cheap-art/paper-mache-dogon-mask
