What are different kinds of abstract art?

What kinds of art projects would work in a kiln for 7th graders?

  • I just received a donation of a kiln for our school. Since we lost our funding for our art teacher, we have to teach art ourselves this year. I am looking for projects I can do with my 7th graders that involve the kiln - any suggestions?

When I was doing stuff (decades ago) it was ashtrays, which is hardly appropriate today. But making a little bit steeper sided shallow bowl can serve to hold coins, pins, buttons, miscellany or if a bit larger the pocket contents of pants taken off at the end of the day. But a key is that some kids are good at making small statues - animals, fish, lizards, dinosaurs, and people while other kids are not but can manage the bowl shapes - so have the kids find what they can do and make up bowls with decorations mounted on the edge - fish, lizards, etc. - so it is not just a small statue that ends up on the back of mama's shelf, but a useful decorated bowl.

What I did when I was in 7th grade was make a small gargoyle ( we were told to pick 3 different animals or creatures and sketch a picture then make them out of clay combining the animals). When they are done put them in the kilm then have your students paint them. It was really fun when I did this! Hope this helped :)
