Do you have to glaze clay before you use it?

What type of Clay/Glaze should i use to make oven safe ceramic baking dishes?

I am trying to make a set of oven safe ceramic baking dishes (casserole dishes) and i was wondering if there was a certian clay body i needed to use or if a Cone 6 Buff clay would work. i have heard of people using teracotta but im not a fan of that since you cant put glazes over cone 4 on them. that leads me to my next question; do i need to use a high-fire Glaze (cone 9-10) or is cone 6 acceptable? and if so does anyone have any recipes they would like to share? thanks in advance!!!!

    I know of 3 categories of oven safe casseroles Regular fired ceramics - cone 6 would fit here - can go in an oven but thermal shock can explode start with a cold oven do not shock with cold a cold counter when removing from oven I tied making a tagine it lasted 15 seconds before exploding. Low fire - Still porous - I haven't used much of this I tried sealing a piece with cooking oil that was fired to cone 05 but the piece set off the smoke detector in the kitchen Flam-ware - often cone 10 vitrified clay that can go on a gas flame this has so much iron should not go in the microwave what I made sagged in the kiln I am still learning. cone 6 glaze will already get much hotter than your oven ever will have. Generally you want lead free and barium free glazes. If you want to mix your own glaze read through something like this: http://digitalfire.com/4sight/education/are_your_glazes_food_safe_or_are_they_leachable_12.html You can also buy food safe glazes from a ceramic supplier. Generally I assume you know that ceramic baking dishes should warm up and cool down slowly while actually using them.
