Is it possible to use plaster of paris without a mold?

I want to make a plaster mold of my face, is Plaster of Paris okay to use on my face?

  • Answer:

it's OK to use as long as it is not in a thick layer. The easiest way to achieve that is using plaster bandages. You can buy some either at some art stores (not all) or medical supply places. Or you google homemade plaster bandages and look up some methods for making your own. You will need to make sure the plaster comes off your face, so you will need to use vaseline or something similar on your face. Be especially generous at eyebrows or whereever you have hair. Before you get started I would search for an online tutorial, here is a search on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+make+face+mold+plaster&aq=f but you can also search the general internet. Make sure you understand what you have to do before you get started. You won't have too much time after you started before the plaster sets. Also the obvious: don't put plaster over both nose and mouth... if you want it over the eyes you pretty much need somebody to help you - which would make everything much easier anyway.

You really need to work with somebody else while you try to be still The link is from a chemical company that has a couple of products for life casting - making molds of living people. There are a couple of videos on the page http://www.smooth-on.com/Lifecasting/c1240/index.html It is more expensive than plaster Edit Tigrizzle is right about plaster being safe if you know how to use it. It is also good to work with another person

You'll probably drown before you can get to see a mould of your face. Try using silicon based products, it might be a little hefty in cost though.
