How can I make clay use to make things?

What type of Sculpey clay would be best to use for making figures?

  • I want to make and sculpt small things like animals. Not too small, a decant height of about 8 inches, and be able to paint and glue fur and other materials to. I havent used Sculpey but have heard it is extremely good and would like to try it. I would usually use normal clay or plastecine. Any tips? And also what sorts of things can I use for tools for shaping and sculpting?

    If you are wanting to use sculpey brand specifically, I'd probably opt to use Premo. I find Sculpey III to be brittle when it comes to larger projects. There are other brands of polymer clay such as Fimo, Cernit, and Kato Clay. Any will generally do. Some are softer than others. There are many many tools that you can pick up. Needle Tools (a handle with a needle), molds, Xacto knives and other blades, rollers or pasta machines all seem to be popular tools. You can be very creative with your tools - I actually use knitting needles of various sizes to use in detailing.

Hello... Polymer clay/sculpey clay, these are all different brands, and some are better for different things, some are harder in form to others but most will do the job. Sculpey makes a type of clay specifically for making dolls, you could try that. http://www.sculpey.com/products/clays/super-sculpey-living-doll
