May I know where can I find those kind of clay that one can use to make bowls and cups?
-
Hi, I want to buy clay that can make bowls and cups. This means that they have to be washable and you can eat out of the bowls and drink out of the cup and nothing bad will happen to you. Those clay that are sold in stores seem to be for kids to play with and they will melt or disintegrate in water. Please give me the brand name or tell me where to find a suitable clay material. I live in Singapore by the way. Oh, and I would like the clay to be white so that I can paint on it. Thank you.

This is more of a side note answer: paint would be dangerous to your health. Glaze, or colouring for clay, is what will affect the toxicity of the pottery. Try store bought glazes rather then creating your own. The store will have tested and fool-proofed the glaze. Keep in mind most glazes are used after a first firing. Do not try to eat or drink out of raku glazed pottery. The type of clay you are looking for is a stoneware or porcelain. Stoneware will fire to a light gray colour. It is possible to buy a pure white stoneware also. Sometimes its difficult to find. It should be fired at cone five (2185°F or 1196°C). Porcelain will fire to a crisp white and should be fired also at cone 5. This website will explain it in more detail: http://www.dickblick.com/categories/firingclays/ Try this supplier: http://www.grahamhay.com.au/suppliers.html Best of luck!

The clay I think you are talking about and is called Slip and you can buy it from any Ceramics dealer. You can also purchase molds from them. The ability to paint on these is in the glazes. You can make the objects any color you like using glazes. The safety of using these pieces is both in the glazes and in the firing process (Kiln).

Well if you want to paint detail on your pieces then you will have to fire at a cone 5. But if you want your pieces to also be microwavable then I would fire to a cone 10. It depends on what type of kiln you have also. But since you are in Singapore you should be able to find a really nice porcelain clay to work with. If not you can order through Laguna Clay through California. They distribute through most the country here in the US. They handle every type of clay you want, white, soldate grey, terra cotta, you name it they have it. Here is their website: http://www.lagunaclay.com/product.htm
