Eiffel tower symbolsm???

  • Do you think the eiffel tower is a phallic symbol? I am of french heritage and altough Australain at heart i hold some sybolim withmy heritage as some respect for my family and their countries history. I have never questioned the engineering of the tower and its design and pupose. I actually know little about the eiffel tower, Gustave Eiffel apparently was the designer, as they say about the french men and their apparent love/lust reputation, do you think he was feeling a bit randy when he designed it????? lol

    I don't know. Maybe Eiffel had a problem with his own phallus and he had to compensate by building the worlds biggest phallic symbol. Then when he was on a date and wanted to impress his lady he could say: "Want to see my tower? It's a real bigg'un!" LOL I think that any kind of sexual symbolism is strictly in the eye of the beholder (or the dirty mind). If you want it to be sexual - it is!

I think you have to accept that any very tall building has by it's very nature to take on the ability to be judged as phallic if the observer so desires. Never heard that Monsieur Eiffel intended that when he engineered it but he was a Frenchman I believe so there is no telling.

No I don't think the tower is a phallic symbol, although today has become a symbol of love and romance today. It is actually a symbol of the fantastic engineering skills of its designer Gustave Eiffel- {who designed the wrought-iron skeleton for the inside of the Statue of Liberty} It was built to commemorate the 100th-anniversary of the French Revolution at the Centennial Exposition of 1889. His methods inspired the architects and engineers of contemporary superskyscrapers such as the World Trade Center.
