Is cheap clay okay to use?

What kind of clay do I use?

  • I'm making this helmet for my friend, and basically it's just a big large oval. It's a really large paper craft which I made out of card stock paper. Now I'm wondering what kind of clay I should use to finish it up with, though I have no knowledge of modeling clay. I don't really look forward to fiberglassing or anything so I'd like to leave that out of the options. I need help trying to find a cheap affordable modeling clay that I can use for the helmet, and if there's any other things I should buy to prevent the clay from cracking (gesso, sealer, etc.). I need maybe at least up to 5lb of clay.

  • Answer:

How about paper maché ? http://www.dickblick.com/paper/sculpture/details/ It is reasonably light weight and non toxic After it is dry it is strong like card board The water may damage the card stock so use your judgment
