  • Answer:

The paper mache will take a a day or three to dry everything, depending on how thick you make your model. It's been well over a decade since I've last used paper mache, but there should be an easy recipe online, as it's just a flour/water mix. The concoction should resemble thick oatmeal. You're also needing newspapers and/or magazines, and a *Lot* of them. Tear 'em into two inch strips width-wise so they're easy to work with, then dunk 'em in the flour/water mix, squeegie the extra off the newspaper strip with your fingers, then start from the 'ground' up, layering your model. To cover more space height-wise, you can also crumple up a few pages of nespaper, dip 'em then squeeze out excess, then plop it on your model and And build up thick parts of mountain that way. Also, when you're adding the layers, try to go horizontally, then vertically, then horizontally, then vertically, et cetera and so forth. Gives the structure a bit more cohesion. -Edited to add that I forgot to inform you that paper mache air-dries fine, there's no need to try and bake it. Depending on how good you are at it, you can also cut out shapes and sculpt it a little with an Xacto knife.

I would not use the strip method for this project. I would buy papier mache pulp that is mixed with water. Like this http://www.dickblick.com/zz331/02/ It can be sanded, drilled, carved and painted after it dries...lots of leeway for making your forms this way. The best I can say about making something in 3D is to try and feel your form out while looking at a reference photo. If you see the base starts wide ...make a wide base, where you see tapering, then taper your forms. Animals are different. First start by finding the simple shapes in the animals form, then find smaller ones to add details. Don't let the project intimidate you and remember to use references. It is much harder to try and make it all from imagination than if you have the object you are trying to model in front of you. Good luck!
